Sustainable Development

Paper and board is an “Environmentally Friendly Material”.

In order to fulfil its commitment to the protection of the
environment, the Smurfit Kappa Group has set itself precise
environmental objectives for the years to come.

The process of producing wood and paper products – like any
other production process – generates emissions into the
air,
effluent into water sources and solid waste. But the constant
efforts made by the Smurfit Kappa Group to minimize
its
impact on the environment have resulted in the substantial
reduction of these emissions over the years.

Wood and paper products are part of an integrated eco-cycle
based on the photosynthetic conversion of water, carbon

dioxide, nutrients and other biomass components.

If used wood and paper products are collected separately from other waste they start a new life as a secondary raw
material or bio-fuel. For SKG recycling is an economic and technical reality, and its record in this field is among the best. In our mills, recycling rates – measured by the percentage of recovered fibres used in domestic consumption – are very high (over 70 %).
